THE JOURNEY TO CANAAN – #4 I AM – God’s Chosen Personal Designation

I need to say that before God gives a commission, He does an introduction of Himself because you cannot work God if you do not know Him.

I’d like to highlight very few realities revealed in the name God named Himself when He was asked for His name by Moses. He said “I AM THAT I AM……. Thus shalt thou tell the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you” (Exodus 3:14)

I AM who I AM from before the beginningGod reveals His eternal nature through that name. Jesus in John 8:37 says before Abraham was I am. The reference point Israel had to God was Abraham because God Himself revealed Himself as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. He reveals that before Abraham knew me, even before Abraham came to be I AM. In His revelation to John, Jesus reveals Himself as the One who is, who was and who is to come. He didn’t come into existence, the day He was born in the earth, not even the day He was conceived. He was before the beginning.

I AM, I change notGod reveals His immutability. He reveals that He is who He is yesterday, today and forever. Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day and for ever.” I AM THAT I AM. God is saying I AM the God that Abraham knew, that Isaac knew and that Jacob knew. And all that they knew me as I AM.

I AM, regardless of any situation. He reveals that His essence is not determined by situations. God had been given different names by different people by reasons of situations in which God came through and revealed His might. But there are certain situations where the strength of that name might not appear to be in operation, God says I remain who I AM even in such situations. Had God called Himself the Deliverer, as pertaining to what He was to do at that time and the situation came when Pharaoh added to their burdens instead of letting them go, they probably would have thought God had gone into extinction.

I AM all that I AMrevealing that no designation which is sufficient to qualify all He is. Different names given to God at different times by different people only reveal a part of God that has been revealed to men. When I say I am a Christian, it means my identity is tied to Christ and my life revolves around the person of Jesus Christ. God by introducing Himself as I AM, tells us that you can’t tie His identity to just one attribute. I AM all in all. This then points out the fact that no matter how much of God we know, we still don’t know Him. Moses was a man with whom God spoke face to face. That same Chapter in which it is recorded that God spoke to Moses face to face, Moses was still praying to know God. I’d like to say that the more of God we know, the more of Him we do not know Him because the more you know God the more you discover that you’ve really not known Him.

I AM reveals that we can’t exhaust all that is embedded in this name God chose to call Himself, “I AM”.

May God graciously reveal Himself to us as we press to know Him.
